Koppertree Seminar Topics

The Power of Presence
This seminar is designed to look into the world of people who have the gift of presence.  How is it that some people command our attention without saying a word?  Let’s face it…presence is not something you can teach.  You either have it or you don’t.  However, there are strategies that you can use to help support your efforts to become more present, visible and confident.

Recruiting Your Best Ally…The parents
You know them.  They are the ones that only show up when the teacher did or said something to their child or they are the ones who show up EVERYDAY to “help” with classroom activities. Why are some teachers so fearful of the people who could make their 180 days of teaching a lot less stressful?  Why do some teachers wait until there is a “problem” before they reach out to parents or guardians?   This Seminar is designed to share creative ways to establish rapport with the people who matter most in the lives of your students.  Let us show you how to use the parent that NEVER seems to go away or the parent who NEVER seems to show up.

Teambuilding
It’s no secret that we don’t have to like each other to work with each other.  In fact, we have all worked with people or for people that we would rather NOT see at all after work hours.  But getting along with one another does help us both personally and professionally. This training is designed to encourage collaboration, interaction, and conversation between peers.  We will engage you from start to finish! AND….you can implement these same strategies in the workplace. Fun! Fun! Fun!  Bring someone you don’t like… LOL!

Student  Engagement
Bottom line…the more involved students are with their learning, the more efficient the learning, and the more successful they are at remembering what they learned.  This training is designed to share research-based engagement strategies and ideas that are designed to help boost student achievement.  It will also put the myth to rest that classrooms have to be loud in order for students to be engaged or the more quiet the student, the more they are learning. NOT!!!!

Lesson Plan Basics
How would you like to be placed in the trunk of a car and not told where you were going or why? Essentially that’s what teachers are doing to their students when they show up without an instructional plan.  This training is designed to share the ABCD’s of lesson plan execution.

Freewriting…A powerful way to build writing fluency
Have you ever been invited to a party that started at 9pm, but by the time you finished looking in your closet for something to wear…it was 10:00pm?  Eventually you decided not to even go to the party.  Frustrated huh? This is similar to what happens when we experience writer’s block?  According to research, writer’s block happens when we are thinking about what to write instead of writing what we are thinking.  It is something refreshing about being free!  Not being judged on grammar or mechanics.  Just free!  Some of the best writing comes from the top of our heads (Ask Jay Z). This training will allow participants to experience the freewriting strategy and share ways to implement this method into their daily lesson plan or their daily lives.

Creative Ways to Teach Grammar
When students’ sentences are broken and their verbs don’t agree, we blame texting, social media, and their home environments.  In fact, a great deal of time is spent reminiscing about the good ole days when students were taught how to diagram sentences.  In today’s society we are competing with videos, facebook, instagram, and other flashes of entertainment.  This means that our methods for teaching something as important as grammar has to be engaging, creative and fun! This training will share 10 creative grammar activities.

Another look at Vocabulary Instruction
Let’s admit it.  Students hate unfamiliar words.  Most adults do too. Research shows that vocabulary, more than grammar, is the key to comprehension and communication. This training is designed to share creative ways to teach vocabulary!

Classroom Discussion Strategies
How many of you remember it being taboo to “talk” in class? For some reason teachers felt that learning was not happening if we were sitting around talking to our friends.  We all know now that most of our knowledge comes from others.  Some people may call this gossip, but if we, as teachers, encourage constructive dialogue in the classroom, students can activate, deepen, and refine their schema.  This training is designed to discuss and practice three classroom discussion strategies that promote preparation, engage students, deepen understanding and balance the talkers with the non-talkers.
